Liz started her career in the Autism field as a therapist during the beginning of a speech pathology degree. Little did she know that this role would lead her on a journey of discovery of how she could most effectively work with people on the autism spectrum.
This journey has seen Liz become a special educator, be mentored by speech pathologists, teach at Aspect, lecture at university and complete tertiary supervising.
Liz even completed a thesis on “Teaching Conversation to a Child with Autism”. which ultimately led her to Relationship Development Intervention (RDI). journey to find what was missing with the current therapies I was working with.
Liz has worked with children, teens and adults with ASD with ages ranging from 16 months to adults.
After working in the disability support sector for so long, Liz was inspired to go into Plan Management as she was frustrated with plan managers and believed she could make the plan management process far less stressful and with her extensive experience on the other side, be able to better assist families needing to access funds from the NDIS.
When Mel's first child arrived 9 weeks premature, she acquired many health, social and emotional challenges. Even though many of these concerns could be explained by her prematurity, Mel's mum intuition knew there was much more to her story.
In 2011 Mel's daughter was diagnosed with sensory processing disorder and ADHD. An Autism diagnoses quickly followed. Mel was thrown into the big unknown world of managing additional behavioural and developmental needs including a language delay that has impacted her daughters developmental progress. It was then I was introduced to the range of therapeutic services which inspired me to learn all I could regarding my daughters diagnosis and her additional needs.
Thankfully, Mel had a background in Early Childhood Education, and this alongside her personal experience with Autism, allowed her to transitioned her career into disability support work.
After many years working in the disability support space AND trying to manage her daughter's own NDIS funds, Mel (along with Liz) decided to take on Plan Management.
